Kinja'd!!!

My FiST in happier times, with a friend.

So yeah. I was on a business trip last Wednesday from Nashville to Memphis, then back home. Trip down went well, I did my business in a business-like manner, and then I made the journey back. It's roughly 225 miles from one city to the other.

A couple weeks prior, Tennessee had some pretty nasty winter weather. Lots of freezing rain. Lots of ice. As such, there were potholes in most all of the roads.

Well, I was tooling along the interstate, going the speed limit, and I begin the third leg of my journey. It was night, it was raining, it was dark. And what appears before me, but a pothole.

Now, I say pothole. It was a chasm to the center of the Earth. Really, only 2-3" deep, but I hit it with the left wheels of my FiST.

But it happened so fast, I didn't realize what awfulness I had gotten myself into. Because there wasn't just one of these things. There were dozens. For probably 100 feet, I hit these big dirty bastards at full highway speed. By the time I could react, I had passed the potholes.

But it was over.

The vibration started. And it was noticeable at speeds above 40. Needless to say, I was slightly terrified. No flats, thankfully, and I made it home safe.

However, we come to today. FiST is in the shop, and I just get a call from the Dealer on the damage.

All. Four. Wheels. Are bent. (I hit some potholes on the right side too, apparently). One of the tires is showing its belt. All four wheels and all four tires need to be replaced to the tune of $2,319.19. And I bet the shocks are blown too. So there's that too. They haven't gotten to check those yet.

FiST is in shop for 3 days til everything comes in.

But seriously... If you buy a FiST on Oppo... Shit WILL go down. It's only a matter of time.

That's the thing I hate about my low-profile all-seasons. The argument I forgot to make to my dad regarding winter tires is that, in addition to all the other countless advantages, soft, tall snow tires are less susceptible to pothole damage than my normal tires. I've already lost one tire to a pothole this hear, and if it were a snow tire it probably would've been okay.

My problem is that snow tires (specifically the Blizzaks I looked at) are really only good below 40 degrees. So I'd have to keep switching them on and off throughout the winter since the temps fluctuate so much here in Tennessee.

When it comes to potential resale value and what I like my car to look like, yes. If I pick a specific aftermarket wheel, what are the odds the buyer I line up for it will like that wheel? Modifications don't add value except to the owner at the time. And I don't find value in it.

I was going along at 40 during a snow squall on Valentine's day and all of a sudden a fuckin' ditch appeared in the road. All I could say was "shit" as a warning to my gf as it ate my driver side front wheel.

Driving down to DC from NYC yesterday I hit a pothole with my left front wheel that definitely bottomed out the front suspension in my Gen Coupe. Luckily— no tire or wheel damage, but the impact force was enough to unseat the entire headlight assembly on the left side. A simple Fonzie thump was enough to reset it, but it still blew my mind that it was that significant of an impact. Happened in the middle of a 3 hour stretch of driving so I didn't even know until I got home...

Maybe this is the side effect of everybody and their grandmother buying SUVs. Who needs up-to-date infrastructure and well maintained roads when 90% of the vehicles on the market have 4+ inches of suspension travel. We may as well go back to cobblestones as far as local and state governments are concerned.

For as heavy as they are the stock FieSTa wheels sure are fragile, I've got a bent one too, and not even any tire damage... It balances true with a little work, but it's for sure bent. I destroyed a tire last winter on my 15" MSW wheels and drove 2 miles on the flat because the damn ANC on the Fiesta is so good at correcting external directional input I didn't realize the tire was flat (No TPMS in the winters) and the wheel was FINE. The MSW TYPE23s in 15" only weigh about 16.5lbs, vs the 23lbs of the factory 17s

Is your insurance deductible less than the wheels & tires? Also, a local lawyer may be able to argue your case about the conditions of the roadway and the municipality, city, state, department, etc., and they could split the replacement fee. Last year I got two sidewall bubbles from a day-fresh pothole in front of a local city hall, and they paid half the replacement cost, even though the prior tires were almost new. Better than nothing,

Kinja'd!!! TheBaron2112 > boxrocket
03/10/2015 at 00:11

Kinja'd!!!0

Deductible is. But I called and they said they would cover $750 worth of the damage, but the rest would be prorated and applied to my insurance payment. So I'll pay for it either way AND it factors as a claim. So why would I do that?

Also, TDOT has been hit with so many potholes, they'll most likely claim it was an act of god that they couldn't get in front of, maintenance wise, and then say they provided adequate warning. There was a sign warning of potholes.

Kinja'd!!! boxrocket > TheBaron2112

That sucks.

With that said, perhaps consider a second set of wheels and tires for winter months with smaller wheels and taller sidewalls, but same overall dimensions. It won't look nearly as good, but it could be worth it in the long run. There are bound to be some wheels off of a wrecked Fiesta available, and a good set of winter tires aren't too pricey. For my Volvo I run the factory 15" wheels and the 60-series sidewall in winter months now, and a set of 17" Moda R6s that I think are matched with 40- or 45-series sidewalls for the warmer months.

Side effect of our obsession with austerity IMO. We've had a real drop in infrastructure spending over the last 7 years. Maybe if politicians stopped calling it "infrastructure spending" and started calling it "spending on shit that all of us use and benefit from" we might actually see people support improvements to our crumbling roads and bridges and inefficient electrical grids. It would have made sense to have a huge investment in our roads and other infrastructure via a jobs program to get people back to work and rebuild our infrastructure in 2008 when 12-15% of the people in this country were out of work. Instead we got a bank bailout and austerity, everything's falling apart, and income inequality and artificially low upper-tax bracket rates have completely destroyed any revenue generating capability our government has to actually invest in the Country.

I don't know the rest of the supporting evidence for the Oppo ST curse, but tall wheels, short sidewalls, and stiff suspension with little travel is going to mean bent wheels. See if 16" wheels with a taller side wall will fit. Fat tires on performance cars look bad-ass—which is why you're so attracted to that rally car in the other thread.

Deductible is $500, and they cover up to $750.

The wheels and tires and everything cost me $2300. The remainder of the $2300 minus the 750 would have been pro-rated onto my monthly insurance bill with who knows how much more of a charge.

So I just went ahead and paid it.
